BEYOND CRISIS!

LEARN SOCIAL AND EMOCIONAL SKILLS PAR EXCELENCE

When one family member suffers emotional instability, impulsive behavior, and interpersonal difficulties, the whole family suffers. In such families it is common that parents, siblings, and others do not understand the internal experience nor the behavior of their loved one. They may feel regularly exposed to what seems to be irrational behavior. Families may react emotionally or engage in logical arguments, both of which can make things worse. This can become a pattern of negative interactions that ends up exhausting and dysregulating the whole family.

The workshop includes both a theoretical and practical approach.  Classes include lectures, slide presentations, real-life examples, behavioral role-playing. Exercises and practices are assigned each week.

Corrine Stoewsand & Carola Pechon

Corrine Stoewsand and Carola Pechon have been coordinating Family Workshops for 15 years. Both were members of the first DBT team in Argentina and trained in the USA with Marsha Linehan at Behavioral Tech. Carola currently lives in the city of Bariloche, where she directs Tandem Center for Assistance and Training in Psychotherapy. Corrine works with the DBT team of Fundación Foro in Buenos Aires while traveling through Latin American countries training families and professionals in skills.

Given the need and importance for families to access the learning of fundamental resources to improve their quality of life, they decided to launch the online course whereby families who are far from research centers and treatment of these issues, have tools at their disposal that otherwise would not be accessible.

What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed by Marsha Linehan at the University of Washington in order to treat persons with a history of suicide attempts or self-injury. These individuals met criteria for borderline personality disorder.

DBT is a dialectical approach that proposes the synthesis or integration of opposites. Dialectical strategies help both the therapist and the patient to free themselves from extreme positions and observe how two positions that seem incompatible may not be.

DBT assesses situations and identifies behaviors that are relevant to the patient's goals in order to try to solve life problems.

DBT goes beyond diagnosis and considers patients as people who lack some skills. Patients need to learn and practice them in order to use them efficiently in different situations. These skills include four primary modules: mindfulness, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and tolerance for discomfort.

It is estimated that 6% of the population suffer from a lack of emotional regulation resources and meet the conditions of borderline personality disorder (BPD).
